Theft involves the unlawful taking of property or service (also known as “stealing”). Burglary, on the other hand, is the act of breaking into a home or business with the intent to commit theft.
The value of the items or services taken constitutes the consequences of a conviction. For example, the punishment for stealing a car will be much greater than the punishment for stealing a bicycle. Although some theft crimes, such as shoplifting, may only require you to pay a simple fine, others may cost you thousands of dollars in fines and entail prison sentences of up to 20 years.
